Students seeking their Certified Claims Professional (CCP) designation will have the opportunity to gain insight into the legal depths and nuances of insurance fraud through two Claims and Litigation Management Alliance classes taught by Colodny Fass' Maria Elena Abate, a veteran fraud-fighting insurance defense lawyer.

Ms. Abate, who is also a certified Florida Insurance Fraud Education Committee instructor, will teach a  Level 1 Class on Property Insurance Fraud and a Level 2 Class on Personal Injury Protection Insurance Fraud as part of the upcoming program at the CLM 2016 Claims College School of Insurance Fraud in Baltimore, Maryland from September 7-10.

The CLM Claims College currently consists of eight three-level specialty schools and two one-level schools.  Students must pass all three levels of a school to earn their CCP.  Each level consists of pre-course reading materials, in-class instruction, group projects and an exam.

"Florida is known as the insurance fraud capital of the nation," Ms. Abate explained.  "What happens here is a veritable blueprint for similar activity nationwide.  That's why getting the word out through education helps companies effectively identify and fight fraud, ultimately saving money for insurers and policyholders alike."

With almost three decades of litigation experience, AV-rated Ms. Abate is a certified member of the rigorous Litigation Management Institute and the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance among her many other prestigious legal and insurance industry credentials.

Her tough experience with insurance fraud cases has given her unique insight into what types of evidence are admissible, thus resulting in the early identification of issues that may qualify a case for pre-trial dismissal or resolution.

Ms. Abate attacks cases at the earliest possible stage, beginning with an early evaluation of questionable claims, including examinations under oath, depositions, third party discovery, surveillance, and social media and forensic data.

With longstanding relationships and multi-faceted affiliations built over the years at Florida's Department of Financial Services, Division of Insurance Fraud and Office of Insurance Regulation, Ms. Abate also educates SIU personnel in countering particular fraud niches and works directly with regulators on emerging patterns of unusual or suspected fraud activity.
